The Facts About Passports

NO Passport needed for US Citizens Yet

Visitors who are U.S. Residents

Although a passport is the ideal identification, you do not need a passport to enter Canada, nor to return to the U.S. from Canada. Just make sure you carry identification to establish your citizenship such as a Birth Certificate and at least one Photo ID Card. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen, carry your certificate. Permanent residents, you just have to bring your Green Card. The exception is for Temporary Residents of the U.S., who must have a passport.

Caution: if you have a criminal record, including DWI, you may be refused entry to Canada.

Visitors from Other Countries

Only a passport to required to enter Canada from most European countries. Others may need a visa. Check The Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency website.
